CEO WhatsApp - startblog

Jan Koum is the CEO of WhatsApp, and co-founder along with Brian Acton. They created the cross-platform instant messaging acquired by Facebook Inc.

Born in Kiev, Ukraine, he moved to California in 1992 with his mother and grandmother.

After much struggle and study, he got a job at Ernest & Young as a digital security tester, where he met Brian Acton, the beginning of a long friendship. In 1997, as both were good at what they did, they were hired by Yahoo!, the company in which they remained for nine years, until they resigned in 2007 to try for vacancies on Facebook.

Ironically, Jan and Brian did not pass the selection process to work at Mark Zuckerberg's company. Two years later, Jan came up with the idea that it would lead them to close a billion-dollar deal with the Founder of Facebook.

They created the famous and lucrative app after their gym banned the use of mobile phones. Getting annoyed by the lost calls, decided to invent a solution with his partner and friend Brian Acton. The two agreed that the future was the iPhone, such as "an extension of what you are", were then acquiring their first Iphones, realizing the big move in Apple's app store. The name WhatsApp came almost immediately.

Launched in early 2010, after a series of challenges, WhatsApp was gaining more and more users over time, making it the most popular messaging app in the world. In 2013 WhatsApp was a success, about 200 million people already used it. This was certainly the result of Jan's successful partnership, which was more dedicated to the technical part, and Brian, who was responsible for the company's financial aspects. As each focused on what was most easily, excellence became a natural consequence.
